Grunge was a sound that clearly defined music in the early ‘90s. It is more of a hard rock or alternative rock genre that had its early start in the year 1980. Musically, grunge is really simple, but it can be easily identified with its soft verse and hard chorus. Most of the time, grunge singers start soft. As the chorus comes, all the fuzz and feedback will begin to rip your ears. Even if their time has ended, their music managed to survive the test of time. Here are ten of the best grunge bands that made a name during their era.

Nirvana

Nirvana was undeniably the number one grunge band of the ‘90s. Because of them, the “grunge” genre was made known to all. The band is best known for its classic songs, “Nevermind,” “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Come As You Are.” Sadly, Kurt Cobain left in 1994. Given a short span of time, the iconic band spoke about quality music.

Pearl Jam

After the death of Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam began soaring high from the ashes. With their 1991 album entitled “Ten,” they were able to set the tone for the group. After “Jeremy” made waves on MTV, everyone knew more about Pearl Jam. For them, “Vitalogy” and “Vs” were the albums that kept the grunge genre going.

Alice in Chains

A huge impact was created in the grunge scene after Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley teamed up for Alice in Chains. The harmonies and music they created were unmatched. When things were becoming heavy, Layne Staley would deliver in extra punches. With their hit music, “Man in the Box,” they became famous in the grunge genre.

Soundgarden

The band was formed in Seattle in the year 1980. However, they had their breakthrough with their single “Outshined.” It was followed by the song “Rusty Cage.” They blended in a little bit of their punk roots so as to create a moody sound.

Stone Temple Pilots

In 1992, there were doubts whether a grunge band from outside Seattle could grow and become famous. San Diego-based band, Stone Temple Pilots, arrived with a wave of grunge music with their album entitled “Core,” but it was the song “Plush” that had memorable rhythmic guitar lines, which established the band.

The Melvins

The lead singer and guitarist of The Melvins, Buzz Osbourne, together with drummer Dale Crover, were considered among the few pioneers of grunge genre. Their music greatly influenced several Seattle-based bands, such as Nirvana and Soundgarden. Up to this day, the band is still making waves with songs like “Honey Bucket,” ”Hooch” and “Night Goat.”

Screaming Trees

Screaming Trees already hit it big with their music, “Nearly Lost You.”with the help of Mark Lanegan as the lead vocals, and the bass and guitar work of siblings Van and Gary Lee Conner, the band emerged as one of the pioneers of the grunge movement. Though “Nearly Lost You” made their mark as a band, they were able to produce all-time favorites like “Bed of Roses” and “Dollar Bill.”

Mother Love Bone

The brilliance of the band wasn’t really known until they were gone. Unfortunately, Andrew Wood died due to drug overdose after they released their first album. They produced grunge favorites, such as “Stardog Champion” and “Crown of Thorns.” The band was also noted for being Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard’s pre-Pearl Jam bands.

Hole

It wasn’t easy for Hole to go out of the Kurt Cobain’s shadow, Courtney Love’s late husband. However, in the year 1994, they released an album that the audience loved. The raspy voice of Courtney Love was perfect for the band. In 1988, the sound of the band began to change. From the song, “Celebrity Skin” to the track “Awful,” it is indeed undeniable that the band had their roots in a grunge sound.

Mudhoney

Mudhoney is definitely one of the most consistent and solid grunge bands. They started somewhere in the ‘80s. From the Green River band, Mark Arm and Steve Turner emerged and started Mudhoney. Even if they didn’t turn out as successful as their colleagues, they became well-respected because of grunge anthems like “Touch Me I’m Sick” and “Let It Slide.”
