Andreja Pejic Is Changing the World of Modeling

Andreja Pejic said, “I thought, ‘Try to be a boy and try to be normal’”. The androgynous Australian model was first scouted by an agent while working at McDonalds at the age of 17. Since then, she has walked the runway shows for Marc Jacobs and Jeremy Scott. She later became famous for modeling clothes for both male and female. In a recent interview with People, Andreja Pejic revealed, “I get a little stressed with runway. I wasn’t given that much training in the beginning. I was just thrown in with the girls, and the designer was like, ‘Put these heels on.’” In 2011, she was ranked number 18 on models.com’s list of Top 50 Male Models. In that same year, she was also ranked number 98 in FHM Magazine’s list of Sexiest Women in the World. The latter award was condemned for its argumentative tone to transgender individuals, referring to Andreja as a “thing.” Subsequently, FHM removed the copy, along with Andreja’s entry and sent an apology. Andreja underwent sex reassignment surgery in early 2014. However, it was only in July when she spoke about her transgender identity. She told People, “I want to share my story with the world because I think I have a social responsibility. I hope that by being open about this, it becomes less of an issue.” The 23-year-old is now among the first transgender models to land a major beauty campaign. She was named the new face of Make Up for Ever.

Also, she became the first openly transgender model featured by Vogue in the glossy pages of its upcoming May 2015 issue. She happily announced her breakthrough appearance on the magazine with a post on Instagram:

“If at the beginning of my career in the modeling industry or half way through it or even this time last year you told me that I would end up having a 4 page feature in American Vogue I would have probably told you ‘oh I dunno about that. So, you can only imagine what I’m feeling right now.”
