Scarlett Johansson Cuts Ties With Oxfam

Scarlett Johansson is one of the hottest actresses working acting jobs in Hollywood today. Her talent and appeal are unquestionable and seem to be growing every year. Lately, however, she has been getting attention for other reasons. She has recently resigned as ambassador of the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief (Oxfam). Oxfam is a charity organization that is dedicated to confronting the issue of poverty all over the world and coordinating with local organizations in problem areas to provide relief aid. The group enlists many famous celebrity spokespeople and ambassadors. Until recently, one of those was Scarlett Johansson. According to Fox News, the issue arose when Johansson came out in support for SodaStream, a company operating in an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. Oxfam opposes any and all trade to and from this region and considers it a violation of international law. Johansson, who is Jewish, supports SodaStream’s business and believes in the peaceful trade between Israelis and Palestinians that it represents. She actually became an ambassador for SodaStream, which prompted Oxfam to express concerns for her affiliation with them. The choice to step down was surely a difficult one for Scarlett to make as one of Hollywood’s high-profile actresses. Regardless of one’s views, it is refreshing to see a celebrity with strong political convictions.
