Meningitis Victim Gives Out Heart-Wrenching Performances

On Dancing with the Stars, Amy Purdy and Derek Hough performed a contemporary piece making the 3rd week of the show’s 18th season a memorable one.

Amy was the first double amputee contestant to ever appear on the show. She was partnered with five-time champion Derek. Although he didn’t have any plans to come back to the show, he later changed his mind, when he knew that Amy was a contestant.

The duo danced to Christina Perri’s “Human” on March 31, 2014 to tell the story of how Amy’s illness made her suffer and how her dad gave his kidney to save her life, while she was hospitalized due to bacterial meningitis. The illness caused the loss of her legs, but her father was there to guide her until she learned how to walk again.

At first, Amy talked about how painful her legs felt, but with music, she was able to get up and dance. The dance was more than enough to tell the story of her journey and Amy chose to dedicate her performance to her father for his undying support.

For the dance, Amy used a special prosthetic leg. But, despite that, her disability didn’t hold her back at all. She and Derek managed to perform their routine with grace. As a pair, they were able to deliver a lovely and passionate dance and as for Amy, she was very expressive.

After the performance, everyone in the audience was in tears. The judges even loved their performance, giving them a score of 36 out of 40.
