Matthew McConaughey’s Dazed and Confused Audition Video

Matthew McConaughey’s role in Dazed and Confused as David Wooderson is probably one of the roles that kickstarted his acting career in the 1990s. Now, a video of him showing off his acting prowess and how he landed the role, has surfaced online.

Dazed and Confused is a comedy film, featuring an ensemble of young actors, who later became big stars, including Matthew McConaughey, Ben Affleck, Mila Jovovich, Adam Goldberg, Rory Cochrane and Jason London. It centers on a group of teenagers from Texas and their last day of school in the summer of 1976.

According to sources, the 23-year-old McConaughey met the casting director at the bar of Hyatt Hotel. The actor’s friend worked as a bartender and so he was usually given a free beer. During that time, the casting director, Don Phillips, was working on the project, Dazed and Confused. McConaughey was brought in for an audition. From there, Wooderson’s character was brought to life and the rest is history.

The Criterion Collection released McConaughey’s audition tape for Dazed and Confused in celebration of the film’s Criterion release. His first two auditions landed him two acting roles. The actor continued to soar high in his career and in 2014; he took home the Academy Award for Dallas Buyers Club. He also earned critical acclaim for his TV series, True Detective, and his film, Interstellar.

This year, we won’t be seeing much of him. He will be working on a dark drama project, directed by Gus Van Sant, Sea of Trees. In 2016, he will voice a character in Kubo and the Two Strings and if the odds are in his favor, he will star in the film, The Free State of Jones.
