As the series progressed, additional characters were added as allies of the detectives particularly in the New York City County Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and the Medical Examiner’s office. Many of the series’ episodes are loosely based on real life cases that have caught media attention.

Running into its 16th season which premiered on September 24, 2014, the current season follows where the previous season left off. The previous season has seen Detective Nick Amaro sent somewhere in the other part of the city.

The series has also been known to have been crossed over by many of NBC’s series such as Chicago P.D. and Chicago Fire.
