Hollywood’s Top 10 Breakthrough Actors of 2013

Marie Skillern| April 8, 2014

The year 2013 was like a big comeback for the film industry and TV industry as it paved the way to great performances from veterans and starlets alike. From the critically acclaimed movies fit for the awards season to the topnotch material presented on TV, it was definitely one of the best years for the Entertainment industry.

However, 2013 was not only about the veterans as several newcomers have shown great potential in performances they have dished out last year. It is a wonder how with just one gripping performance an up-and-coming actor can generate such a buzz. So, to celebrate these actors and make their names known to the public, we are coming up with our very own list of Top 10 Breakthrough Actors for 2013:

1. Lupita Nyong’o

You know you have something good when a drama school student lands an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress on her first acting job. She may have gone through tons of acting auditions but her role as Patsey on this Oscar’s Best Picture, 12 Years a Slave, could not have been more perfect for her.

Watching her evolving from one random slave in the background to the strong spirited woman who was willing to defy her master, was so much to take, but we mean that in a good way. She was able to show how ferocious and vulnerable her character could be all in the same movie was breathtaking. So, if that was just a taste of what this actress can do, then we are just as psyched with what she has to offer in the future.

2.  Margot Robbie

This Australian actress broke through the movie scene playing the unlucky wife of Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) on The Wolf of Wall Street. For a while there anyone would think she has been in the business for some time to come up with such kind of performance including adopting a Staten Island accent, but she is just a neophyte.  This leaves us wanting more from her upcoming projects like Focus with Will Smith and the reboot of The Fantastic Four.

3. Olivia Munn

This actress-comedian has built her acting career up from the small screen and progressed to work in movies. So far, her work on her movies has not been as remarkable (yet!) as her hilarious performance on HBO’s Newsroom. But we are waiting to see more dramatic roles for her and we think we are just in luck because she has projects with Eric Bana, Johnny Depp and Ewan McGregor waiting in line.

4. Brie Larson

She has been on mainstream movies like 21 Jump Street and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but it took an Indie movie for critics to notice what she had to offer. Her character on Short Term 12 is one of those antihero roles that we do not get to see very often. Those who have seen the movie knew that each actor was able to reach into the story with an understanding and empathy for their characters. You do not get a lot of those from young actors, so we say kudos to you Brie!

5. Michael B. Jordan

Michael B. Jordan was already fascinating to watch on the small screen, but we think he is always meant for the big screen. In 2013, he played 22-year old Oscar Grant III who was fatally shot by a police officer on the indie Fruitvale Station. The role won him tons of Breakthrough Performer awards and more acclaim from critics. We are definitely looking forward for other projects especially since he is working on a romantic comedy with Miles Teller and Zac Efron.

6.  Adele Exarchopoulos

This French actress is the youngest recipient of a Palme d’Or award at Cannes for the International Breakthrough film Blue Is The Warmest Colour. She is one of only three females to ever receive the award along with her co-star Lea Seydoux. It also earned her praises for the coming of age role of a woman who struggled through identity confusion. For now, Adele is sticking to French films, but we are predicting that she will be crossing borders sooner than we think when the right acting jobs come.

7. Dane DeHaan

The last two years offered him a good avenue to break into the business in projects like the third season of HBO’s In Treatment, the science fiction thriller Chronicle and the crime drama film The Place Beyond the Pines. But his performance on the biographical drama Kill Your Darlings got him several positive reviews. With that performance, it would be hard for production companies not to notice such great talent and we shall be seeing more of him as he will be playing the villainous Harry Osborn on The Amazing Spiderman 2 this year.

8. Caitlin Fitzgerald

Masters of Sex helped this unfamiliar face hit mainstream. Introduced as a one-dimensional and gracious Mrs. William Masters, she played the changes and dimensions of her character giving justice to the writers and creator of the show. She endeared the audience to her radiant character which came as a good mix and contrast to the other female leads. These developments sure keep us on the edge of our seats for the next season.

9.  Tatiana Maslany

Nothing is as challenging as Tatiana’s job on Orphan Black. Playing six characters in one show calls for a really tough job switching from one role to another (not to mention costume changes and hair and makeup), but Tatiana does it flawlessly giving one depth to one character after the other. That achievement is enough to earn her first Golden Globe Nomination and a Best Actress trophy from the Broadcast Television Journalists Association.

10. Miles Teller

At first sight, Miles Teller looks like the average teenage guy, but the kind that makes you fall in love with him at the end of third period class. He has a charm that draws the viewers to him and that worked perfectly well with his on-screen love interest, Shailene Woodley, on The Spectacular Now. So, we are absolutely ready for him to impress us once again on The Fantastic Four, Divergent and That Awkward Moment.

It is amazing how slowly the Entertainment Industry has started to pick up and offer movies and TV shows that do not only showcase good plots and writing, but also great talent. With these breakthrough performances, we are quite confident that the future of our actors will be at par with the great ones, if this trend continues. This could serve a great pattern for future actors and a great start for an awaited resurrection of the real movie and TV industry.
