Captain Phillips Actor Shares His Life-Changing Journey

One of the most talked-about films of 2013 was director Paul Greengass’s, Captain Phillips. The film was a timely action thriller that told the true story of war, crisis, and adversity. It has been nominated for several Oscars. Barkhad Abdi, one of the film’s main actors, was able to bring his real life experiences to his role and deliver an Oscar-Nominated performance. Abdi recently gave an interview to Parade, in which he discussed the impact that the film had on his life, and vice versa. Barkhad Abdi plays a Somali pirate in the film, who takes a container ship hostage. In real life, Abdi was born in Somalia and he and his family endured several years of civil war until they managed to escape. Abdi was extremely open about his past and expressed his elation and gratitude that he has managed to travel from such difficult origins to a life of film auditions and acting jobs in Hollywood. Though he has become quite famous and highly acclaimed for his performance, Barkhad remains humble and reserved. “Captain Phillips” tells the true account of a commercial vessel that is hijacked in the Gulf of Aden. The ship’s captain resists the demands of the pirates and battle of wills ensues between Captain Phillips (played by Tom Hanks) and the leader of the pirates (Barkhad Abdi). After a long and harrowing ordeal, the ship is rescued by the US Navy. Abdi’s performance garnered a lot of attention and he is considered a top contender for the Oscar this year for Best Supporting Actor.
