History witnessed how tall people can actually get, but with these interesting tales come medical explanations. Here is a list of the world’s tallest men recorded in history, living and dead.

  Suparwono is the tallest recorded Indonesian. His official measures were taken by the Indonesian Record Museum in the year 2009. According to him, “I started to realize my exceptional height when I was 10 years old. At that time, I was already the tallest at my school and in my village.”

  Zhang Juncai is one of the tallest people of the world standing at least 7 ft. 11 in. tall. He was proclaimed as the tallest man of China on November 23, 2004.  

18. Anton de Franckenpoint (8 ft.)

  Anton de Franckenpoint was the very first person that was verified to reach 8 feet in height. He was born 400 years ago and his skeleton was added to a museum in Marburg.

  Jean-Joseph Brice, otherwise known as Geant des Vosges, was born in Ramonchamps, France in 1835. He was believed to have a height of 245 cm, but historical evidence suggests that he was just 230 cm.

  Suleiman Ali Nashnush was a Libyan basketball player and actor, born in the year 1943.  In 1960, he underwent surgery in order to correct his abnormal growth. He was believed to be the tallest basketball player that played for Libya. However, this is not true. His final recorded height was only about 7 ft. 6 in. tall.  

15. Gabriel Estevao Monjane (8 ft. 1 in.)

  Gabriel Monjane’s abnormal growth was attributed to an overactive pituitary gland. When he was 17, he already stood 7 ft. 10 in.  At this age, he joined a Portuguese circus. Later in his life, he suffered leg problems that crippled him and broke his hip.  

14. Julius Koch (8 ft. 1 in.)

Among the 15 individuals in medical history who reached an 8 ft height was Julius Koch. His height was attributed to a disease called malady eunuchoidal-infantile gigantism, also known as the “daddy-longlegs syndrome.” His height was just estimated since his legs were surgically removed when they developed gangrene.

  Morteza Mehrzad is Iran’s tallest man. His unusual growth began at the age of 16 when he fell off his bike and injured his pelvis. At that time, his right leg stopped growing. His height was measured by a member of TheTallestMan.com.  

12. Brahim Takioullah (8 ft. 1 in.)

  Brahim Takioullah was born on the 26th of January in Guelmim. He is recorded as the tallest man of Morocco standing at 246 cm. Aside from being tall, he also has the largest feet of the world according to the Guniness Book of Records.

  Patrick Cotter O’Brien, also known as the Irish Giant and the Bristol Giant, was born in County Cork, Ireland. He died in 1806 from the effects of the disease called gigantism.

  Bernard Coyne is among the few persons in medical history, whose height reached 8 feet or more. He acquired his height because of eunuchoidal infantile giant or the “Daddy Long-Legs Syndrome.” In 1921, he died of a glandular disorder.

  Don Koehler was recognized as the tallest man in the world during his time. As a result of a medical condition called acromegalic gigantism, he stood 8 ft. 2 in. His abnormal growth was first noticed when he was at the age of 10. In 1981, Koehler died from a reported heart condition.

  Vikas Uppal was believed to be India’s tallest man until his death. He could have been considered the world’s tallest living man if it wasn’t for the strict verification criteria of the Guiness Book of Records. Uppal died on June 30 due to a failed brain tumor operation.

  Guiness Book of Records recognized Sultan Kosen as the tallest living man in the world in its 2010, 2011 and 2012 edition. Other than that, he also holds the record of having the largest hands and largest feet at that time. Because of his extreme height, he was unable to complete his schooling.  

6. Edouard Beaupre (8 ft. 3 in.)

  Edouard Beaupre was actually a circus and a freak show giant, who starred in the Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. He was the eldest of 20 siblings and was born in Saskatchewan, Canada. For the first three years of his life, his growth was normal. Eventually, his growth rate increased so much that at the age of nine, he was already six feet tall. At age 23, Beaupre died due to his rapid growth and tuberculosis.  

5. Vaino Myllyrinne (8 ft. 3 in.)

  For once, Vaino Myllyrinne was the world’s tallest person, standing at a height of 251 cm. He served the Finish Defence forces and was considered the tallest soldier ever.  

4. Leonid Stadnyk (8 ft. 5.5 in.)

  Leonid Stadnyk is a Ukrainian national, who was believed to have stood at 8 ft. 5 in. However, Guiness Book of Records didn’t officially recognize him as he refused to be measured according to standards. His rapid growth started when he was 14, after a brain surgery. On August 24, 2014, Stadnyk died from a brain hemorrhage.  

3. John F. Carroll (8 ft. 7-1/2 in.)

  John F. Carroll, otherwise known as the Buffalo Giant, was born in Buffalo, New York. His abnormal growth began at the age of 16. He suffered from acromegalic gigantism and severe 2-dimensional spinal curvature. Assuming that he has a normal spine, his height would have been around 264 cm.

  John Rogan, also known as Bud Rogan, was born in Sumner County, Tennessee. His excessive growth started when he was 13 that resulted to Ankylosis. Because of this, he can no longer stand or walk. He just moved around with the use of a cart. It was only until his death that his exact height was measured. At that point, he was measured in a sitting position, making him the tallest African-American.

  Robert Wadlow is often known as the Alton Giant, standing 8 ft. 11.1 in. Due to hypertrophy of the pituitary gland that resulted to an abnormal production of growth hormone, his growth continued to adulthood. While he made a professional appearance at the National Forest Festival, his ankle got irritated because of a faulty brace. He was treated with emergency surgery and blood transfusion, but his condition worsened. He died in his sleep when he was 22.
